He helped lead the team to the 1986 conference title and then in 1987 Johnson led the team with 143 tackles with 85 unassisted tackles and nine tackles for a loss, earning First Team All-Conference honors on defense. After college, Johnson would go on to play in the Canadian Football League (CFL) where he would go on to become one of the greatest linebackers in the history of the league. After two seasons with the BC Lions, Johnson made his mark in the league by playing the next 13 seasons with the Calgary Stampeders. With the Stampeders, Johnson helped lead the team to six Grey Cup Championship appearances with victories in 1992, 1998 and 2001. Johnson was named a Western All-Star Linebacker five times and was named the Wester Division Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 1998. He would go on to finish his career with 1,095 total tackles, which currently ranks as the third most in CFL recorded history. In 2009, Johnson was named to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and to the West Texas A&M Hall of Champions.
