Warriors Earn Split against Riverside, Ventura

TORRANCE, Calif. --- El Camino College recorded a split in its two matches against Riverside and Ventura on Wednesday at the ECC Sand Courts.

WARRIORS 4, RIVERSIDE 1

The Warriors stayed unbeaten on the season in the first match of the day in rainy conditions as the team's only loss came on the No. 5 court as Ava and Arabella Ober played together for the first time for ECC. Tate Mercer and Payton Garrison swept the No. 1 court while Madelyn Hancock and Alyssa Estrada needed three sets to take care of their match on the No. 2 court.

VENTURA 3, WARRIORS 2

The final match of the day was a great one as it came down to the third and deciding set on court one to decide the winner. The Warriors dropped the matches on courts five and two to fall behind 2-0 but wins on court three and four knotted things back up.

Mercer and Garrison held a 1-0 lead and a 20-18 advantage in the second set but the Pirates' top team of Shai Daniels and Viola Barrios stormed back with four straight points to tie things up and require a third set to decide a winner.

The Pirates jumped out to a big lead in the third and, despite a run by the Warriors top squad to cut it to three points, the Pirates were able to keep the distance and score a 15-11 win to secure the decision for Ventura.

The Warriors will now hit the road to take on Santa Barbara and Glendale at Santa Barbara City College on Friday.
