TORRANCE, Calif. - The defending state champions and No. 3 seeded El Camino College were stunned at home in a 1-0 loss against the No. 19 Miracosta Spartans on Saturday afternoon in the Second Round of the Southern California Regional Bracket.
The Spartans were gifted an early penalty in the third minute of the game and were able to hold on to the 1-0 scoreline the rest of the way.
The Warriors who held almost 90 percent of the game's possession couldn't breakthrough the Spartans low block defense. They outshot Miracosta 29-to-4 with 9 shots on goal compared to the Spartans 3 shots on goal. The Warriors had 10-to-2 corner kick advantage as well.
The Warriors had multiple good looks on goal led by Marvin Gamez who had 8 shots including two on frame. Bryan Casteneda made 9 saves in goal for the Spartans to thwart the Warriors attack.
In the final minutes of the game during stoppage time, Aldahir Rua had a shot saved by the goalkeeper. On the rebound from the goalkeeper spill, the Warriors thought they had a penalty kick awarded after the ref signaled for a PK but the ref was called off by the sideline ref for an offsides.
The Warriors season came to an end with a 14-3-4 overall record. Over the last two seasons, this sophomore class has an 38-4-4 overall after last year's magical run to the state title.
