Samayoa Kicks Off Conference Championships with Repeat Title

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. --- Sophomore Iyanah Samayoa highlighted El Camino College's first day at the South Coast Conference Championships at the East Los Angeles Swim Stadium.

Samayoa won the 200 individual medley title for the second straight year, claiming the top spot with a time of 2:08.55. She improved on her time from last year's title (2:10.16) by nearly two seconds.

After day one, both the men's and women's team sit in third place in the standings with two days left in the competiton. The Warriors' men's team sit in third place with 125 points. Mt. SAC leads with 292 points with Long Beach in second at 238.5 after 12 events.

On the women's side, the Warriors have 132 points with Mt. SAC in first (329) and Long Beach in second (264) after 12 events.

Other highlights for the Warriors on Thursday included:

  • 200 Freestyle Relay: The women' team of Samayoa, Olivia Mozian, Victoria Rodriguez and Raina Henty-Dodd placed third with a time 1:44.57. The men's team of Ryan Song, Vincenzo Crivello, Brayden Sanchez and Samuel Orendain also finished third with a time of 1:30.30.
  • 500 Free: Mozian placed second with a time of 5:21.59 on the women's side while Brayden Sanchez placed sixth (5:11.49) on the men's side.
  • Song placed fourth in the men's 200 IM with a time of 1:56.85.
  • Crivello placed fourth in the 50 free (21.97).
  • 400 Medley Relay: The men's team (Song, Orendain, Crivello, Sanchez) placed third with a time of 3:44.61 while the women's team (Mozian, Samayoa, Alyssa Mack and Henty-Dodd) also finished third in 4:23.71.
