Sanchez Wins Conference Title on Final Day at SCC Championships
TORRANCE, Calif. --- Monica Sanchez was the highlight as the El Camino College men's and women's swim teams concluded action at the South Coast Conference Championships on Saturday at the ECC Aquatics Center.
Sanchez claimed the conference crown in the 200 breaststroke, posting a time of 2:34.82. Sanchez had the second-best qualifying time during the morning prelims at 2:38.62, behind Mount San Antonio's Sarah Tolmasoff's 2:36.52.
Sanchez and Tolmasoff were placed next to each other with Sanchez in lane five and Tolmasoff in lane four. Sanchez trailed her counterpart in the early portion of the race but she took the lead in the final 25-yard stretch and scored the win by nearly a second. Sanchez swam the final 50 yards in 40.52 while Tolmasoff finished the stretch in 42.74.
Overall, it was the Warriors' second conference title of the weekend after the men's 200 free relay team claimed the top spot on Thursday.
Both the men and the women's team finished third overall in the team standings. The men finished with 465 points behind conference champion Mt. SAC (1,005) and runner-up Long Beach City (468).
The women tallied 452 points to place behind champions LBCC (972) and second-place Mt. SAC (758).
Other medal-winners and highlights from Saturday for ECC included:
- Olivia Mozian finished second in the 1650 free with a time of 18:08.19.
- The men's 400 free relay team of Ambe, Bugarin, Caden Kendall and Wheeler placed second with a time of 3:13.64.
- The women's 400 free relay team of Jasmine Eskander, Sanchez, Mozian and Pinillos finished third with a time of 3:47.12.
- Jasmine Eskander placed third in the 1650 free with a time of 18:12.89.
- Francesca Pinillos was third in the 100 individual medley with a time of 1:05.31.
- Koichiro Ambe placed third in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:56.39.
- Gio Wheeler claimed third place in the men's 200 butterfly with a time of 1:56.64.
- Angel Byrne placed fourth in the 200 fly with a time of 2:05.57.
- Alex Bugarin finished fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.45.
- Alyssa Mack finished fourth in the women's 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:46.53.
The Warriors will take a week off and return to action at the 3C2A State Championships, which will be hosted by Orange Coast College from April 30 – May 2.
