SAN MATEO, Calif. - The El Camino College Track and Field team competed at the 2019 CCCAA Track and Field Championships held May 17th and May 18th at San Mateo College. The Warriors had to compete against the elements as there was a steady amount of rain drop and wind gusts. The men's goal for the day was to come in the top 5 spots while each individual women was looking to claim a medal position (top 8). The men succeeded in their goal and achieved fifth place in the team competition behind 4th place Sequoias 57 and American River's 61. Riverside won and Mt. Sac came in second place. After losing to Cerritos in the the South Coast Conference Championships and the Southern California Regional Finals, the Warriors were able to finally finish above them.
The women had a great weekend and almost all of them were able to achieve their goal of placing in the top 8 spots.
Jay Rhambo had the highest finish by coming in sixth place in the hammer. She threw for a mark of 43.58 meters (143-0).
Samantha Ealy came in seventh place in the triple jump with a mark of 10.86 meters (35-7.75). Teammate Aliyah Grissett finished right behind her in eighth place with a mar kof 10.75 meters (35-3.25).
Qwintin Workman led the way for the Warriors with two second place finishes in the long jump and 400m hurdles. He lost in both events to the tournament athlete of the meet, Jamal Britt of College of the Sequoias. Workman came in second in the long jump with a mark of 6.82 meters (22-4.5). The winner jumped 7.33 meters (24-0.75). Workman came in second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.90. The winner came in first place with a time of 52.13.
Carson Bix came close to defending his title but came in second place in the 1500m with a time of 3:58.29. Chris Weiland of Mt. Sac won with a time of 3:56.07. However, Bix showed a lot of heart and had a fantastic finish to the season after missing 2 1/2 months to start the season and only racing in the final five weeks of the season.
Patrick Washington came in third place in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.54.
The 4 x 400 relay team came in third place with a time of 3:16.69 holding off fourth place Sacramento who finished with a time of 3:16.80. The relay team consisted of Chris Pitts, Dhahran Woods, Timothy Mates, and Qwintin Workman.
Timothy Mates came in fourth place in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.83. Mates also came in seventh place in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.14.
Matt Arruda had an impressive distance double for the meet. He came in fifth place in the 10,000m run with a time of 31:53.66 on Friday. The next day, Arruda came in sixth place in the 5000m run with a time of 15:30.72.
Chris Pitts came in 9th place in the 400m with a time of 48.95.
Shea Wissler came in eleventh place in the decathlon with 5291 points.
This concludes the 2019 track and field season for the El Camino College Warriors.
