Nakai’s Win Highlights Warriors’ performances at Dave Shannon Invitational

TORRANCE, Calif. --- El Camino College hosted the annual Dave Shannon Invitational on Saturday at Murdock Stadium.

Freshman Aiden Nakai scored his career victory as he took home first place in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:05.62. He also recorded a third-place finish and second amongst community college runners in the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.50. Nakai was one of many Warriors athletes that performed well at the meet.

Other highlights included:

  • Laighton Scott placed second overall and first amongst community college competitors in the discus as he posted a throw of 47.11 meters (154 feet, seven inches). It was a new season best for Scott, eclipsing the 41.71 meters he recorded at the Viking Invitational on March 7. Scott also placed second overall and first amongst community college athletes in the javelin as he posted a throw of 45.09 meters (147 feet, 11 inches). It was also a new season best and his first throw of the season that went 40-plus meters.
  • Tilliana Wakefield-Carl tied for first place in the pole vault with a mark of 3.50m (11 feet, 5.75 inches). She was the only community college athlete to record a mark past 10 feet. It matched her season best that she set on March 21 at the Pasadena Invitational. Teammate Valentina Amescua (3.05m, 10 feet) placed fifth with Misha Amir-Moazzami was seventh at 2.60m (8 feet, 6.25 inches).
  • Ty McCormick finished second overall in the 3,000 meters steeplechase with a time of 10:36.62, just two tenths behind winner Andrew Kanzangian of Glendale.
  • Arianna Hurtado placed second overall and first amongst community college runners in the 5,00 meters. She posted a time of 19:46.28. She also placed third overall in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:05.74.
  • Curtis Williams placed third in the long jump with a mark of 6.37 meters (20 feet, 10.75 inches). He was just 0.03 meters back of first place.
  • Savanna Mullins placed fourth overall and first amongst community college runners in the 400 meters, clocking a time of 59.42. It marked her first attempt at running the 400m this season.
  • Alan Canales placed fifth in the 5,000 meters as he posted a time of 16:18.27.

The Warriors will return to team competition on Friday, April 4 at the Moorpark Invitational.
