Scott and Mercer Third at Conference Championships; Two Pairs Qualify for Regionals
TORRANCE, Calif. --- Tate Mercer and Aireon Scott secured third place on the final day of the South Coast Conference Pairs Championships on Saturday at the ECC Sand Courts.
Mercer and Scott defeated teammates Erica Griffiths and Scheala Nielsen (21-17, 21-18) in the third-place match after both pairs fell in the semifinals earlier in the day.
Both Warriors teams qualified for the upcoming 3C2A Pairs Regionals on May 2-3 at Mount San Antonio College.
In the semifinals, Mercer and Scott drew the No. 1 overall seeded squad of Candace Ceballos and Madeline Castillo of Mt. SAC. The Warriors' duo would fall in straight sets (21-16, 21-11) to fall into the third-place match.
Meanwhile, Griffiths and Nielsen were the No. 2 seed in the tournament but could not snatch a game from the No. 6 team of Enaya Vaielua and Tyreana Allen of Long Beach, also going down in two sets (21-17, 21-19). The second set was tied 19-19 but the Vikings' duo found a gap in the defense to get to match point and then a service ace secured the match for LBCC.
Vaielua and Allen would go on to defeat Ceballos and Castillo in the finals (21-17, 18-21, 17-15) to claim the 2025 SCC Pairs title.
