WALNUT, Calif. --- El Camino College scored an upset South Coast Conference victory over No. 9 Mount San Antonio on Wednesday afternoon at the Mt. SAC Aquatics Complex.
Max Hale tied a school-record with 10 goals in the victory as the Warriors defeated the Mounties for the first time since 2017 in the third-place match at the SCC Championships, an 11-6 triumph.
Hale logged 10 goals on 16 shots and added three steals on the day while Marc Bugarin scored twice with three assists and Scott Fujiwara tallied one goal with a team high four assists.
Vios Lopez recorded five saves to record the victory.
The two teams were tied 9-9 heading into the final period and Hale opened the scoring in the period with 6:41 left in regulation.
Hale then gave the Warriors a two-goal advantage with a power-play goal with 5:51 left and that proved important as the Mounties were never able to pull even again in a match that featured five ties and three lead changes.
With the Warriors leading 12-11, Lopez made the biggest save of the day, denying the Mounties' George Roby-Unkovich of a goal to preserve the lead. Hale would then come back on the ensuing possession and scored the eventual game-winning goal off an assist from Brayden Sanchez with 2:31 left in regulation.
The Mounties trimmed the deficit back to one with 2:16 left but they were never able to record the equalizer as the Warriors improved to 16-6 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.
The Warriors return home Thursday to face Delta at 3:30 p.m. at the ECC Aquatics Center.
