Samayoa Finishes Second on Day One of State Championships

SANTA ROSA, Calif. --- El Camino College opened competition at the 3C2A State Championships on Thursday afternoon at Santa Rosa Junior College.

Sophomore Iyanah Samayoa placed second in the 200 individual medley, her first of three individual events in which she will compete this weekend. Samayoa's bid to repeat her state championship win from a year ago came up just short as she finished in 2:06.00, just 0.29 seconds behind winnder Noemi Bravo-Guzman of Allan Hancock College.

Samayoa still has the 100 and 200 breastroke on her docket in the last two days of the state championships.

In addition to Samayoa opening her weekend on day one, Olivia Mozian competed in her first individual event of three this weekend, placing ninth in the 500 freestyle. She finished in 5:16.42, a new season best for the freshman.

Mozian and Samayoa also competed with teammates Alyssa Mack and Raina Henty-Dodd in the 400-yard medley relay on Thursday, finishing in 10th place with a time of 4:13.95.

In the 200 free relay, Victoria Rodriguez joined Mozian, Samayoa and Henty-Dodd to finish in 12th place with a time of 1:42.99.

On the men's side, Ryan Song raced in his first of three individual races this week, placing 10th in the 200 IM with a time of 1:56.32.

Day two of the 3C2A State Championships opens up on Friday with prelims scheduled at 10 a.m.
